As a realtor in St. George, I hear the phrase “forever home” pretty often, especially from first-time buyers.

They tell me that it’s okay if things aren’t perfect because they fully intend to take their equity and move into a “better” house within a few years. Their ultimate goal, of course, is to end up in their “forever home” — wherever that mystical place might be.

“Forever home” is a phrase that embodies all our hopes and dreams of future happiness.

But life loves a curveball.

Jeannie was happily living in her “forever home” when she came into my life. She had plenty of bedrooms for visiting family members, a backyard with a swim spa, and a dedicated art studio where she could put her gifts to use.

And then, Jeannie unexpectedly lost vision in one of her eyes.

This news would be devastating to any of us. But as an artist, it was heartbreaking for her.

To make matters worse, Jeannie learned she was at risk of losing vision in her other eye as well. The best way to prevent this is to make sure she has quick access to an eye surgeon. If something happens and she can get help quickly, they should be able to save her sight.

Every minute counts.

And her home was 20 minutes away from the nearest ophthalmologist.

It was after receiving this news that Jeannie and I really connected — and the search for her new “forever home” began.

We found it less than one mile from her doctor’s office, and she was able to purchase it before her existing home was sold. (Ironically, the family who ended up purchasing it was also leaving their “forever home” in Northern Utah to enjoy their retirement years in the sunshine.)

This wasn’t an overnight process, of course. There were many twists and turns along the way. We negotiated, coordinated, and otherwise worked out the kinks in a plan that Jeannie never expected to make.

But this experience reminded me that my job is so much more than helping people change houses. Moving can change your whole life — especially when outside circumstances are forcing your hand.

No one can guarantee forever in one house, but when my clients are ready to make St. George their home, we find a way — no matter the situation.
